How to Calculate Assist Ratio in Basketball

Assist ratio in basketball is defined as the percentage of a player's possession that results in an assist. This is a cutting edge basketball stat that gives a great glimpse into not only how unselfish a player is, but also how good they are at creating shots for others.

  1. Step 1

    Locate the following stats for a player: assists, field goal attempts, free throw attempts and turnovers. You need each of these stats to successfully calculate assist ratio. You can opt to use stats from one game; however, the resulting statistic is more meaningful if you have a larger sample size. For that reason, season stats or even career stats can be useful in this calculation.

  2. Step 2

    Multiply the total number of assists by 100. The resulting number is known as the base assist number.

  3. Step 3

    Multiply the number of free throw attempts by .44. The resulting number is known as the number of free throw possessions.

  4. Step 4

    Take the number of free throw possessions and add to it the number of field goals attempted, the number of assists and the number of turnovers. This resulting number is known as the total number of possession.

  5. Step 5

    Divide the base assist number by the total number of possessions number. The resulting number is the assist ratio for the player. The assist ratio is typically rounded to the nearest tenth of a percentage point. Any percentage over 25 percent is considered very good, and anything over 30 percent considered great.
