Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Positive attitude
- Supportive nature
Step1
Be a friend. Whether an old friend suddenly comes out to you as being gay, or a new friend (or potential friend) is up front about being gay, you should be a non-judgemental friend first and foremost.
Step2
Understand that someone telling you he is gay does not mean he is hitting on you. Chances are your friend is telling you because he is comfortable with the relationship you have together; he isn't necessarily seeking to change that relationship. Unfortunately, too many people confuse the announcement or "coming out" with an invitation to join the person, and the relationship changes regardless. Don't lose a friend over this particular misunderstanding.
Step3
Show support of your friend. It takes courage for a friend to come out of the closet and let you know she's gay. Don't make her regret that courage. Be supportive and be positive.
Step4
Educate yourself on what it means to be gay in today's world. Your friend is going to face a lot of challenges that straight people often take for granted or aren't even aware of. Help your gay friend by learning to empathize with him.
