How to Make an Ethernet Splitter

Having two computers in a house or office and only one Ethernet jack requires a difficult decision. You have to choose which computer to hook up to the Ethernet or continually switch out cables as you work. Instead, use an Ethernet splitter to connect two computers or network cables into one Ethernet outlet. Making an Ethernet splitter takes time and a little knowledge of wiring.

Things You'll Need

• Short Ethernet cable
• Crimp tool
• 2 RJ45 keystone jacks
• Super glue
• Electrical tape

Instructions

1. Crimp one end of the Ethernet wire with the crimping tool. This exposes the ends of the wire to allow you to split it. Leave one end with the Ethernet end still attached.

2. Open the keystone jacks. Follow the directions on the package to open. Most of the jacks snap open and close.

3. Place the wires into the jacks. Start with the first jack. Place the white and orange wire into Pin 1, the orange wire into Pin 2, the white and green wire into Pin 3, and the green wire into Pin 6. Now to the second jack. Place the white and blue wire into Pin 1, the blue wire into Pin 2, the white and brown wire into Pin 3, and the brown wire into Pin 6.

4. Glue the jacks side by side with super glue.

5. Snap the jack tops back together.

6. Wrap electrical tape around any exposed wires.

7. Plug the splitter into the wall or Ethernet jack. Plug your computers or network devices into the splitter.
