Crossword puzzles are annoyingly addictive and dreadfully difficult, but fortunately, there are ways to improve your skill. There are no magic powers while playing (that we know of), and you can't cast a spell on the clues, but these tips will help you solve crosswords that you thought were beyond your brainpower.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Practice often. By far, the best thing you can do to improve your crossword skills is to hone them with repetition. The more puzzles you do, the better you will get.
Step2
Hold off on writing in an answer until you are absolutely sure it is correct. Don't make the mistake of jotting down the first word that pops into your head that fits. Not only does this get you into trouble later on, but it cuts off your brain before it has had ample time to think about the possibilities.
Step3
Review the multiple meanings of words in your head. Clues often use verbs or nouns that have many definitions. When a multitude of proposed answers is not fitting, move on to an alternate meaning of the clue's words.
Step4
Stay in the same area. Moving at random around the puzzle scatters your thoughts. Work on one square for a longer period of time, and you'll find that your ability to concentrate is much better. When you start to feel burned out, move to a different clue.
Step5
Memorize clues that are frequently used. Crossword puzzles are notorious for reusing their material. Retain the information from puzzle to puzzle and you will find yourself with a nice jumpstart each time you begin a new game.
Step6
Continue to challenge yourself. When you have conquered the easy crosswords, move up to an intermediate level. It is much easier to improve your skill if you keep things difficult.

Tips & Warnings

  • The first letter in any crossword answer is almost always the most helpful for scoring answers to other clues nearby. In an empty area of the puzzle, try to solve the clue in the upper left-hand corner first.
  • "E" is the most commonly used letter in crossword puzzles.
  • Eat memory foods to help improve your skills. Berries, grapes and broccoli are all great for boosting the power of retention, as are any foods with folic acid.
