Upon the death of Lyndon B. Johnson's wife Lady Bird, the LBJ ranch became the property of the United States Park Service. This ranch was known as the Texas White House during Johnson's term as President. Following his death, Lady Bird would often visit the ranch, a reflection of her great love for wildflowers and beautification. Parts of the ranch have been open to the public for some time; now it is all a National Historic Site.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Check the schedule of events to time your trip accordingly. Familiarize yourself with the ranch's history at its National Parks website.
Step2
Explore the website of Gillespie County, Texas. Check out accommodations, most of which are in Johnson City, Texas.
Step3
Fly or drive to San Antonio, Texas. From San Antonio, drive north on Route 281 until it becomes Route 290 into Johnson City. Follow 290 west to the LBJ ranch.
Step4
Fly or drive to Austin, Texas if that is more convenient. From Austin, simply take Route 290 west.
Step5
Go to the Visitors Center once you enter the park. From the visitor's center, you can access bus tours of the park. Within the visitors center are also a number of historic artefact's from President Johnson's time in office.
Step6
As you leave the park, you may want to visit Sauer-Beckman Farmstead. This is a living history farm set in the year 1918.
