Gay rodeo first emerged in the mid-1970s as a fundraising idea on the west coast. Since then, gay rodeo has emerged as a popular event throughout much of the Midwest and West. Though gay rodeo brings together people from the gay and lesbian communities, you don't have to be gay or lesbian to attend a gay rodeo.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate a gay rodeo you want to attend by checking listings at the International Gay Rodeo Association. This association promotes gay and lesbian participation in rodeos and holds rodeo events that are open only to gay and lesbian participants.

  2. Step 2

Let people in the community know that you're attending the rodeo. Websites like HomoRodeo provide a real sense of community by allowing you to connect with other gay and lesbian rodeo attendees.

  3. Step 3

Expect the typical rodeo events at the gay rodeo, such as bull riding, bareback bronco riding and roping events. These events generally look identical to the events you would see at mainstream rodeos.

  4. Step 4

Be ready for some fun. For example, current International Gay Rodeo Association events include the Wild Drag Race, in which a three-person team, one member dressed in drag, race across the arena with a wild steer. Another crowd favorite is goat dressing, in which a two-person team puts a pair of panties on a goat.

  5. Step 5

Meet up with others at the gay rodeo. The community is a large part of the fun at a gay rodeo. Talk to others to see what social events are happening after the rodeo.
