If you're concerned with kickback when using your chain saw, then consider installing a tip stabilizer to your saw. A chain saw tip stabilizer is a little piece of engineering that greatly improves the safe operation of a chain saw by keeping the tip of the chain saw away from the wood. Here's how to install a tip stabilizer.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Chain adjustment tool
  • Adjustable socket
  • Base plate
  • Tip stabilizer
  1. Step 1

Identify your make and model of chain saw. You will need this information so you get the correct tip stabilizer for your chain saw. Contact the dealer for the most compatible part for your saw.

  2. Step 2

Read all the manufacturer's directions before proceeding. Make sure your chain is adjusted to the proper tension before installing your tip stabilizer.

  3. Step 3

Mount the base plate as directed by the manufacturer's directions to the chain saw guide bar. This will be added to the end of the guide bar usually attached with a bolt. Adding the base plate gives you the ability to take the tip stabilizer on and off quickly.

  4. Step 4

Attach the tip stabilizer to the base plate. Be sure the tip stabilizer is secure to prevent accidental rotation into the saw blade, which could cause damage to the chain saw blade.

  5. Step 5

Verify that all other chain saw maintenance procedures such as oiling and engine conditioning have been performed. Preventing kickback is only one of the safety aspects of running a chain saw. If your chain is not properly maintained, the chain could fail, resulting in mechanical damage to the chain saw and personal injury as well.
