Things You'll Need:
- Saw blade
- File
- File holder
- Depth gauge tool
-
Step 1
Find the proper file for the type of chain saw you have. Consult the manufacturer's recommendations on the type of round file needed to sharpen your saw blade.
-
Step 2
Rest the file holder on the depth gauge. This gives you the correct depth of cut if your depth gauges have been properly filed down between every second or third sharpening.
-
Step 3
Set the proper filing angle. Many chain saw file holders have a 30 to 35 degree angle set into them, but file with the current angle already on the blade.
-
Step 4
Cut the saw blade with the round file moving the file holder. Move the file holder in one direction, cutting from the thicker to the thinner part of the cutting blade.
-
Step 5
Be sure to check your depth gauge after sharpening the blade with a depth gauge tool. This will ensure that the saw will cut most effectively and will minimize the risk of malfunction.
