Many people suffer from depression. Up to 20 percent of women and 10 percent of men will be diagnosed with depression in their lifetime. Many depression sufferers are looking for natural alternatives to prescription medications. Magnetic therapy is one of these methods that has begun to attract a lot of attention. Read on to learn how to treat depression with magnet therapy.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Ask your doctor to evaluate your depression first. You should not self-diagnose. Once you know that you are clinically depressed, make it clear to your physician that you would like to try magnetic therapy prior to pharmaceuticals. Your doctor can monitor your progress and make assessments on how well the therapy is working.
Step2
Find a qualified therapist. This method is not FDA approved, so you will need to seek out someone you trust in the industry. The therapist will attach coils of wire to your body to create electrical energy in the brain. This method, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), focuses on the front area of the brain that controls mood.
Step3
Go to treatments on a regular basis for several weeks. While you might not see changes immediately, many patients see amazing results over time and are able to avoid medication. TMS treats the actual depression, not just the symptoms.
Step4
Take aspirin or any over the counter pain reliever if the magnetic therapy causes headaches. This should be the only negative side effect.

Tips & Warnings

  • Studies on TMS are not long-term, so it is not clear how long you should remain on the program. Initial studies suggest that a treatment one time a week would continue to curb depression.
  • TMS is not an approved type of treatment by the Federal Drug Administration in the United States. While other countries, like Japan, use magnetic therapy often, it is not a common method in the United States.
