Chisels are sharp instruments that can make fine, precise cuts and remove thin slices off wood. This type of hand carving may require time, but it gives the satisfaction of completing a woodworking project without the help of electronic tools. Follow these steps to safely carve wood with a chisel.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wood
  • Chisel
  • Hammer
  • Sharp knife
  • Safety goggles
  1. Step 1

Get a good quality wood block or a thick piece of wood. Use an appropriate size which is easy for you to carve. If you are an expert in wood carving, buy a high quality piece of wood.

  2. Step 2

Sketch a design on the wood or make a rough outline of the shape you want to carve with the chisel. Get a 3/4 inch all purpose chisel with a plastic handle.

  3. Step 3

Create an outline of the sketch with a sharp knife or make shallow cuts using one end of the chisel. This boundary helps when you start to carve the wood.

  4. Step 4

Lightly strike the chisel handle with a hammer to start the carving process. Go with the grain of the wood. Use slow movements, as sometimes deeper grains can take the chisel a little too deep than anticipated. Go against the grain only when you are using high powered electronic carving tools.

  5. Step 5

Use small incisions with the chisel to bring out the shape you desire. For fine details, carve by applying pressure on the handle with the palm of your hand. Blow on the carved area at regular intervals to remove wood chips.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use extreme caution when working with a chisel.
  • Always keep your hands away from the route of a chisel.
  • Place a plastic covering on the chisel mouth when not in use.
  • Wear safety goggles when working with the chisel.
