Step 1
Find a pattern you like. Browse through pattern books in your local fabric store. If you are a beginner, look for patterns that say "Easy," "One-Hour" or another description similar to these. It's also good to find a pattern that has multiple sizes in the same envelope.
-
Step 2
Go to the pattern drawers, and pull the appropriate size pattern out. Most stores allow you to do this yourself, but sometimes you have to ask.
-
Step 3
Look at the front of the envelope. Note the variety of garments that you can make from that pattern.
-
Step 4
Turn the envelope over to the other side. Notice the line drawings of the pattern. This tells you how many pattern pieces there are and how many seams to put together. The fewer lines, the easier the garment is to make. You can also read a written description of the garment.
-
Step 5
Read the amount of fabric needed for your size. If you think you need to make adjustments in the pattern, allow extra yardage. The pattern envelope also tells you what type of fabrics work well with that pattern. If you decide to purchase the pattern to make a garment, buy the notions listed on the back of the envelope too.
