From Quick Guide: Garden Furniture
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Carpentry tools
  • 6 pieces of 8-foot long one by four cedar boards
  • 3 pieces of 6-foot long two by fours
  • 1 piece of 50-inch long two by four
  • ¾" plywood
  • 8 framing spikes
  1. Step 1

Measure and cut all wood pieces. Using a stop block on a saw will help assure that all cuts will be the same size.

  2. Step 2

Create the base frame of the bench with four 2 by 4 pieces of wood. Two pieces should be 47-inches long and two should be 9 ¼-inches long. Assemble them with framing spikes, placing the two shorter ends on the outside of the longer two pieces to create a rectangle.

  3. Step 3

Take the two pieces of 3/4-inch plywood that have been precut to 11 by 17 ¼-inch rectangles and attach them to the frame while the frame is on a flat surface, being sure the pieces are flush. Use 2-inch screws in each end to hold this all securely in place.

  4. Step 4

Turn the bench over and attach the slats by using the 50-inch long 1 by 4 piece of wood. Cedar is a good choice for a long-lasting bench. Start by putting one piece on each of the long edges of the frame keeping a slight overhang. Space the other pieces evenly in between. Use 1 ¼-inch screws to secure these slats to the frame on each end.

  5. Step 5

Use the four precut 8-inch right triangles made from 3/4-inch plywood as bracing, placing them in the corner made by the seat of the bench and the legs. Use 2-inch screws to attach these pieces.

  6. Step 6

Get a two by four piece of wood for use as another brace near the bottom of the bench. Place about 4 inches from the bottom and attach with 3-inch screws.

  7. Step 7

Apply a wood sealant to help the slatted bench last a long time.
