Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Check your local farmer's market. Your local farmers may be selling healthy herb plants that haven't been transported in trucks. The roots of these herb plants are usually healthier. In addition, talk to the farmers about how they grow their herbs and the pesticides they use.
Step2
Read up on the herbs you want before you buy them. While herbs are very hardy, some varieties will do better in sunny or shady places. Other herbs prefer a certain type of soil or watering pattern. Make sure the herbs you purchase will flourish within your garden.
Step3
Consider purchasing from your local gardening center. Many gardening centers now sell a wide variety of herbs.
Step4
Look at the herb plant, if you can. Decide whether it looks healthy or yellowish. Smell the plant to see if the smell of the herb is clean and strong. It should have new shoots, or small buds. Look at the roots. If the roots are constricted within the container, don't purchase it. It's probably been in the container for a long time.
Step5
Purchase your herbs online if you can't find any local herbs or don't like the quality of the herbs from your local gardening center. Many reputable places will carefully ship you herbal plants.
