How to Keep Rodents Away From the Garden

Rodents in the garden can be very destructive. They can eat plants, tear up bulbs and dig holes. Keeping rodents out of the garden takes persistence. One decision to make before working to get rid of the rodent is whether you'd rather destroy the rodent, or take a more humane approach and simply keep them away. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Find out what pest is causing problems in your garden and read up on its habits.

    • 2

Make the area less attractive to rodents. Get rid of places where they can hide and remove any food sources from the area.

    • 3

Allow your cats and dogs to chase and hunt the rodents.

    • 4

Install a small fence around plants. A variety of fences are available, including electrified fences. For burrowing pests dig a trench around the plants, line it with mesh wire, and refill the dirt. The rodents won't be able to dig through the wire.

    • 5

Annoy the rodents by using a high-frequency-emitting device in your garden, sprinklers or motion detector lights. You also can use a scent repellent, such as castor oil, garlic, hot pepper spray or fox urine. Be sure to check the instructions that come with the repellent and reapply if necessary.

    • 6

Plant castor bean plants, which are poisonous to some rodents. They also can be dangerous to pets and children, so use carefully. Another poisonous pest control idea is to pour poisons (or drop poison bombs) into a rodent's hole

    • 7

Trap the rodents. Various traps exist, including humane ones that will capture the animal and then allow you to remove it to another area. Make sure your city or town does not have ordinances prohibiting wildlife relocation.
