Step 1
Check the wall and countertop to see if they are level before you layout a backsplash. Use a standard bubble level that you can find at your local home improvement store. They come in 2, 4 or 8 feet lengths. If your wall or countertop is not level, you'll have to make adjustments in the pieces you are using for your backsplash. You may have to insert an extra piece, for example, to take up uneven space between the countertop and wall.

Step 2
Choose the material that you want your backsplash made from. Tile, tin, mirror, copper and various other materials can be used to create your own style of backsplash. To layout a backsplash is to get it ready to install. You must measure for the size pieces you are using. For example, if you use a 4-inch tile, you would start laying out in the center of your vent-a-hood opening (or center of sink, if the backsplash is going there). So, if your vent-a-hood or sink opening is 30 inches, take half of that (15 inches) and that would be the center of your opening. Measure back two inches on either side of your center line. This will center your 4-inch tile in the opening.

Step 3
Mark your center points and your starting points on the wall with a pencil. To layout a backsplash is much easier if you can spot your starting points quickly and clearly.

Step 4
Start laying tile at the top of your countertop and work your way up. This will minimize the cuts that have to be made on the tile.
