Things You'll Need:
- Stocking-shaped wood, ceramic or pottery
- Patchwork design template--or make your own
- Craft paints
-
Step 1
Prepare the painting surface on a stocking-shaped piece of wood, ceramic or pottery, if it's a stand-alone piece.
-
Step 2
Select a location within a larger design for the patchwork stocking. Remember that you want the stocking to look as if it's hanging, so tilt it slightly and sketch out the shape. You can position a Christmas patchwork stocking, for instance, in a design depicting a hearth with pine cones and evergreen.
-
Step 3
Look at patchwork stocking designs to either copy, or to provide ideas for your own. Notice there are square or rectangular sections within the stocking, and each has a different treatment with the paint.
-
Step 4
Sketch out each section on a piece of paper. The design within each section is entirely up to you, but each one should be different.
-
Step 5
Consider sections with gingham or stripes alternated with sections featuring small paintings of little toys, trees or sleds for a Christmas patchwork stocking. Use gingham or stripes in sections in your country theme, alternated with small paintings of flowers, watering cans or even garden fences.
-
Step 6
Decide how the lines separating each section are treated. You can show stitches in paint, or just use a thin line to delineate each section.
-
Step 7
Choose the paints and color scheme such as Christmas colors, or ones that fit in with the country theme you've designed or chosen. Assign colors to each section that fit with the design for that section.
