Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Things You’ll Need:
- Collection of George Clinton records
- Instruments
- Fellow band members
- Rehearsal location
Step1
Jam with friends. A good band is not necessarily comprised of the best players. It's about a vibe. Specifically, musicians who groove well together are more likely to make a successful funk band.
Step2
Name the band. After a couple of jam sessions, it will be clear the "Funky As Fish Grease" band has been created. All will agree that the name was destiny.
Step3
Rehearse until it hurts. Funk should look easy and seamless. The only way to achieve this is to practice until it's perfect.
Step4
Avoid the "Yoko" syndrome. Bands attract fans. Sometimes fans become more than fans. Don't be a cliché and let the fans break up the band unless multi-platinum success is achieved and a comeback reunion could garner millions of dollars.
Step5
Decide whether you will do covers or original material. Funk fans will definitely appreciate throwbacks to the days of old, but if you want to establish the band's identity, try some original material, as well. Audience feedback will often shape the set playlists.
Step6
Get some gigs. Nothing will inspire a band more than a screaming crowd, unless there's a payment for a performance involved. Funk is about the love of music, so even free performances are worthwhile.
