Step 1
Be a model PTA member. Volunteer for committees, voice opinions on issues up for debate and suggest new projects. All of these things not only increases your value to your children's school--they also show other parents that you're an intelligent, interesting person, and one worth getting to know.
-
Step 2
Show off your sense of humor when appropriate. While you want to be respectful of the PTA meeting decorum, throw in some self-deprecating remarks or some sarcasm when you have the floor, as long as you can make it relevant to the topic being discussed. This makes you seem more attractive to potential friends.
-
Step 3
Express concern when other PTA members talk about difficult times in their life or their children's lives, and follow up after the meeting with a phone call. The most desirable trait in any friend is a caring, supportive personality.
-
Step 4
Notice who has opinions similar to yours and strike up a conversation with them after the meeting. Start by talking about the issue at stake and then gravitate to more social topics.
-
Step 5
Call parents you've chatted with regularly at PTA meetings to make social plans. You can ask the kids to come over for a playdate or have the whole family over for pizza one night. This is a great way to begin a social relationship that will gradually grow into a friendship.
