Step 1
Determine what kind of firearm is best suited to the terrain for your deer hunting. If you intend to go in thick, swampy areas a shotgun is preferred while a rifle is better suited for open territory.
-
Step 2
Choose an appropriate shotgun shell for deer hunting with a shotgun. If the area has dense foliage, buckshot is the better ammo while slugs perform better in areas with occasional open brakes.
-
Step 3
Make a wise selection of rifle ammo by taking into account the nature of the game. If you are after a big buck a high speed round like a 30-06 is ideal, whereas a 30-30 might be better ammo for smaller bucks and does.
-
Step 4
Take into account the shooter's physical ability. A slightly built or younger shooter might not be able to comfortably handle a more intense round that can punish with its recoil.
-
Step 5
Practice with your ammo before actually going in the woods to hunt deer. Each type of ammo has its own eccentricities and these must be figured out before going hunting.
-
Step 6
Ask other hunters what type of ammo they prefer. You'll find that local folks understand field requirements far better than any so called deer hunting experts.
