Step 1
Watch your language and your demeanor when you argue with an umpire. Running towards the umpire with arms flailing and profanity flying from your mouth is not the right way. Refrain from using vulgar, obscene language and a threatening tone of voice if you want your opinions to be heard.
-
Step 2
Control your anger when the umpire has made a bad call. Walk calmly over to the umpire and state your case without yelling, screaming or name-calling. Sure, this is hard to do when you're upset. But preserve your dignity, be a good example for others and keep yourself from being tossed out of the ballpark. Stay calm.
-
Step 3
Consider the term "argue." It's really pointless to argue with an umpire. After all, he has the last word in any event. Instead of having an argument, simply state your alternative view of what you think happened at that point in the game. If you think she made a bad call, simply state the rule of the game that applies to the situation. State that her call was bad, not that she as a person/umpire is bad or a failure.
-
Step 4
Go only to the umpire who made the call. Don't try to pit one umpire against another.
-
Step 5
Show respect for the umpire's position of authority when you argue with an umpire. If he is younger than you, don't talk down to him or be condescending. If he is older, don't be disrespectful in your attitude towards him.
