You've got this great tune in your head that is just begging to be recorded. It really needs to be recorded, it is that good. Your band is no where to be found and the song has fantastic harmonies. How are you going to record the piano, the killer guitar, a sweet-piping lead vocal and a harmony vocal being just one person? That's where a 4-track recorder comes in handy. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Obtain a 4 track recorder, headphones and microphone. They can be purchased from large music stores like Guitar Center.
Step2
Record the first track, for instance your piano part, on track 1. You can retake it as many times as you need to get a good recording.
Step3
Play back track one so you can hear it. While you are doing this, arm and record the guitar part on track 2. This will be an isolated separate recording that will not erase the original recording.
Step4
Play back tracks 1 and 2. Adjust their relative volumes. While they are playing back so you can hear them, record the third track. This is a good place for the lead vocal. This is the most important track so redo it as many times as it takes to get the best take possible.
Step5
Play back all three tracks. Now record the harmony vocal on the fourth track. That's it. You've just recorded on a 4 track and isn't it sweet sounding.
