Hives are a group of red patches or bumps that flare up on a person's skin. Hives are usually caused by an allergic reaction and can make the person feel itchy. Since hives can sometimes last for several days, you ought to treat them. Read on to learn more.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find out what is causing the hives to appear. Since hives are triggered by an allergic reaction, the most effective step in treatment is to eliminate your exposure to this item. Note if you have tried a new soap or detergent that could be causing the hives.

  2. Step 2

Go to your doctor to get a skin test. A doctor can test the area of the outbreak to see what is causing the hives.

  3. Step 3

Take an antihistamine. Most over the counter antihistamines, such as Benadryl, effectively reduce or eliminate the hives. Your doctor may prescribe a stronger version for a more effective treatment.

  4. Step 4

Place a cool washcloth on the effected area. This provides relief for the itching or burning.

  5. Step 5

Wear lightweight clothing. While you are having a hives outbreak, avoid wearing anything that is tight. Tight clothing can cause you to sweat and worsen the condition.

  6. Step 6

Inquire about an Epi-pen. In cases where you develop severe hives from allergies, you may need to carry around a dose of epinephrine.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are unsure about the allergen causing the hives, don't worry. You can still treat the hives and reduce allergy symptoms.
  • In cases where the person does not respond to antihistamines, an oral steroid may be given.
