How to Weather Clay Pot Planters

Old clay planters offer a natural charm to a garden that new ones just don't have. The older pots are sometimes hard to come by, because after years outside, they may become fragile and broken. A good way to have old clay planters is to make them yourself. By following the steps below, you can have the look of weathered clay pot planters in your garden.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a small container and make a mixture of half paint and half water.

    • 2

Apply a heavy coating of paint to the entire pot or planter with the paintbrush. Don't worry about neatness because drips and smudges add to the natural, aged look.

    • 3

Use paper towels to remove excess paint as soon as you have finished brushing it on. The color will vary where you allowed it to pool and drip and the cracks and crevices will have an aged look.

    • 4

Allow the paint to dry completely after you finish wiping with the paper towels.

    • 5

Rub dirt all over the dry pot and then smear leaves, grass and any other kind of foliage you can find all over the pot. Try to rub more around the rim and along one of the sides to make it look like it was lying around in the garden.

    • 6

Position the clay pot or planter in the garden and it will look as though it has weathered there for years, naturally.

Tips & Warnings

  • Another way to weather a clay pot is to bury it in the soil for a few months and allow it to turn greenish brown color on its own.

  • Clay pots will develop a greenish patina if you paint them with a heavy coating of plain yogurt and leave them outside for a week or so.
