Many drivers are becoming interested in driving vehicles that are more environmentally friendly. One choice that consumers have is to buy hybrid vehicles. Hybrids are cars that have engines which run off a combination of gas and electric. Keep the following in mind when shopping for a hybrid.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find a hybrid dealer. Most major car manufacturers have a hybrid car model. Toyota and Honda have several hybrids to choose from.

  2. Step 2

Research the model that you are interested in. Find out the average price of the hybrid, the gas mileage, warranty information and any consumer problems reported. You can find this information on the company's website or Consumer Reviews.

  3. Step 3

Look for a hybrid that gets at least 30 mpg in city driving. However, cars like the Toyota Prius report 60 mpg for city and highway driving.

  4. Step 4

Get on the waiting list. Hybrid vehicles are high in demand due to rising gas prices. If you want to buy one, get on the dealership's list as soon as you hear about the model being released.

  5. Step 5

Expect to pay more than for a hybrid. The average cost is approximately $3000 more than the same model with a gasoline run engine.

  6. Step 6

Travel to other areas to shop for your hybrid. You may live in a high demand area which may make it impossible to purchase the car that you want. Surrounding areas may have more hybrids available at a comparable cost.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to test drive a hybrid before you purchase one. You may notice that it drives differently than a standard vehicle.
  • Find out about any applicable tax credits that you may receive when you shop for your hybrid. The tax credit is based on the car's fuel economy.
