How to Identify a French Bulldog

The French Bulldog is most certainly a descendant of the English Bulldog. Around the turn of the century, there were a number of bulldogs imported into France and significant efforts were made in breeding a sort of "toy" bulldog. The French Bulldog was one such result and has the characteristic bat-like ears. Read on to learn more.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Examine the overall appearance of the dog. The French Bulldog is an intelligent solidly built dog. It is compactly built and has a smooth coat. It is curious and alert.

  2. Step 2

    Look at the ears. The French Bulldog has a very characteristic type of ear. They appear like the ears of a bat. They sit up on the head and the orifice of the ear is pointed towards the front.

  3. Step 3

    The eyes of the French Bulldog are generally dark and wide set apart sitting low on the head. The eyes are round and not sunken or bulging looking.

  4. Step 4

    The coat is short hair and has soft skin. The area on the head and shoulders is loose and tends to form wrinkles.

  5. Step 5

    Examine the tail. It is either straight or screwed. It is short, almost like a stub, being fat at the base and comes to a fine tip.

  6. Step 6

    The hind legs are stout and muscular. They are a bit longer than the front legs, raising the hind above the level of the shoulders.

  • The French Bulldog is active and playful making it a wonderful companion. They tend to be well behaved and alert.
