The term "New Age" embraces many different ideas, practices and traditions that date at least as far back as written history. Legends of Atlantis, the early Essene communities, numerology, astrology, astral travel and psychicism are just a few of the many topics that New Age covers. New Age journalism is the professional non-fiction writing of articles (and sometimes books) about the subject. Read on to learn more.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Investigate and learn about New Age thought. Every major bookstore has a section on the New Age. These books may be about astral travel, reincarnation, chakras, metaphysics, auras, and/or life at the center of the Earth. Madame Blavatsky, Alice Bailey and their books "Discipleship in the New Age" and "The Secret Doctrine" are classics of the "old" New Age.

  2. Step 2

Pursue training in journalism. Journalism is an art. Some of the better universities for journalism studies are Northwestern, Chapel Hill and Berkeley. Journalism is a special kind of writing that specializes in newspapers and magazine articles.

  3. Step 3

Practice writing like a journalist. Take classes at a two-year college. Get an associate's degree or go on to a four-year college. Try to get published in local newspapers. If you approach smaller papers you'll have a better chance of seeing your words in print.

  4. Step 4

Dig deep into New Age thought and find a niche. The New Age is really an extremely broad field. Study and scan all the subjects you find in the New Age section of your local bookstores. Then make some choices of what most interests you, whether it is astrology, numerology or Jung's shadow work. Become a master in one, 2 or 3 areas.

  5. Step 5

Study your market. Brainstorm about how you can make money in this field. New Age journalism, in general, is not a lucrative area. You can study the New Age and make this a hobby. But paying for your hobby or making a living from it will require some creativity on your part. Llewellyn Publications is one of the largest publishers of New Age materials, so consider looking at what they publish for ideas. Network with other people interested in this subject, too.

  6. Step 6

Find work as an astrology columnist or writing short astrology forecasts for newspapers or online once you learn astrology (which may take a number of years). Once you understand numerology, write a column about it for a newspaper.

  7. Step 7

New Age thought is a subject all its own. It is ancient yet always changing, and new ideas and authors come and go and leave their mark (or not). Journalism is a writing tradition that is usually based on facts and reporting. New Age ideas are often subjective and do not have a lot of scientific data to back them up. So the merging of Journalism reporting and the New Age is not an easy task. The more you can "report" about the New Age in a way that looks, feels, and smells factual, the better chance you'll have of working as a journalist in this field.
