How to Sell a Concept Car

Also known as "show cars," concept cars are car prototypes that appear in auto shows. They range from conservative preproduction prototypes to experimental, radical new designs intended to test customer reaction. Most concept cars are mockups or have limited functionality. Rarely are they completely functional. However, the ones that are iconic from a popular era may sell for several million dollars.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Concept car
  • Appraisal expert
  • Profile in an advertising website

Step1
Determine the car value. Check Kelley Blue Book or NADA Guides first. Understand that your car's real value might differ from the one listed. It depends on factors such as overall condition, installed add-ons and even current gas prices. It's acceptable to ask for slightly higher price than the guide lists.
Step2
Obtain an appraisal by a car expert if Step 1 was unsuccessful. Classic Auto Appraisals specializes in this service.
Step3
Prepare your concept car before you sell it. Put it through the car wash and wax it. Repair dents and scratches on the exterior. Vacuum the seats and the floor thoroughly. Refrain from smoking inside the car to prevent tobacco odor from lingering.
Step4
Advertise it. Place "For Sale" stickers that include your phone number on the rear side windows. Tell your friends, family and colleagues. Place an ad in Autotrader.com, Cars.com or eBay.com, if you live in the US. If you live in Canada, advertise in Trader.ca.
Step5
Let potential buyers look at the vehicle without interrupting them. Know how to justify its price by being able to complete the following sentence in several ways: "I know the price seems high, but it's really worth it because..." Mention that you have two appointments with people who want to see the car tomorrow.
Step6
Know the paperwork involved before you sell a car privately. The rules that apply to concept cars might be different depending on your area. Ask the vehicle registration authority in your state or province for more information. Refer to Samarins.com for listings.
Step7
Remember your bottom line and keep it firm. A concept car can't be a lemon. The buyer knows that it doesn't have hidden problems and troubles.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some concept cars are from movies. One example is Ford Motor Company's Lincoln Futura from 1954, which became the Batmobile in the popular "Batman" TV series that aired in 1966.
