Things You'll Need:
- Crimping tool and set
- Screwdriver
- Pliers
-
Step 1
Purchase a complete in-dash car stereo system that is satellite ready, preferably similar to your existing in-dash satellite radio or at least the same brand. Read the manual thoroughly and make sure all of the parts are in the box. Assemble the parts (if necessary) as instructed. Get ready to carefully disconnect and uninstall the older in-dash satellite radio.
-
Step 2
Make sure you have the necessary tools for stereo removal and installation. Disconnect the negative battery cable to protect your car, truck, SUV or van as well as your new equipment. Have the manual handy before you replace an in-dash satellite radio.
-
Step 3
Remove the factory installed satellite radio from your dash. Note that you'll need the right tools to remove the old receiver without damaging anything. Know that some new stereo systems come with small tool pieces to help you remove your receiver.
-
Step 4
Slide the old receiver out gently once you've detached it. Unplug all factory wiring from the removed stereo receiver. Plan to reuse the wires inside your dash when you replace an in-dash satellite radio.
-
Step 5
Connect a wiring harness adapter, if needed, to your new receiver's wiring to integrate your new receiver to the existing connections in your vehicle. Use a crimping set to easily attach wires and the adapter or solder the wires together. (Find out about soldering at the "Popular Mechanics" website).
-
Step 6
Remove the mounting sleeve from your new receiver if it comes with one. Place the sleeve inside the receiver opening in your dash. Bend the perforated tabs to secure it.
-
Step 7
Use a custom installation kit if you have a larger opening in your dash. Plug in the new harness to the existing wiring in your vehicle. Tuck the wires back into the opening. Remember to connect the antenna also. Slide the new receiver forward and lock in place.
