Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Memorabilia
  • Shadow Box
  • Batting
  • Fabric
  • Fabric Glue
  • Pins or liquid adhesive
  • Wood blocks or foam
  • Embellishments
  1. Step 1

Choose what memorabilia you would like to display in your shadow box. Make a shadow box of mementos from an event you would like to remember or create one for a friend or loved one as a gift.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a shadow box that is big enough to hold all your memorabilia items for whatever memory you wish to preserve.

  3. Step 3

Cover the back of the shadow box with fabric or decorative paper. If you don't wish to use glue on your items, attach something that you can pin your items to such as batting with fabric over it. You ca purchase batting at a fabric store.

  4. Step 4

Position your items in the box. Layer them to create dimension in the box by mounting the items on different widths of wood blocks or foam pieces and pin them to the board or use strong liquid adhesive if you would like them permanently attached.

  5. Step 5

Add embellishments to your creation such as silk flowers, beads, jewelry, lace, or fabric to dress up your box. Keep to the theme of the box when choosing these items so it all fits together.

  6. Step 6

Lay out all your items before permanently attaching items onto the back board of the shadow box. Once you have it the way you want it, attach it to the back, check it to make sure all items are neat and the way you want them and assemble the frame and glass.

Tips & Warnings
  • Shadow boxes can be used to hold heirlooms or items that commemorate a wedding, the birth of a child or a school graduation.
  • To make the backing for your shadow box with fabric, cut a piece of batting to fit the back of the shadow box and cut a piece of fabric that is an inch longer than the batting on each end. Wrap the fabric around the batting and around the back of the board. Glue the fabric to the back all the way around the edge with fabric glue. Now you can use your straight pins to hold your memorabilia.
  • You can glue pieces of wood inside your box to make shelves for small items.
