Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • White glue or decoupage medium
  • Brayer or popsicle sticks for smoothing
  • Foam or small paint brush or cotton swab
  • Damp rag
  • Craft knife
  • Sealer
  • Covered box, like a cigar box
  • Felt (optional)
  • Pictures from magazines or photos
  1. Step 1

Select the box that you want to use. Make certain that it's sturdy enough to decoupage and last a while. Inexpensive heavy cardboard boxes can be purchased for the purpose. If you choose, you can paint the box first.

  2. Step 2

Clip a variety of photos out the remind you of the person, are family pictures or just blend well together. You may want to follow a theme, like stars and the night sky.

  3. Step 3

Arrange the pictures in any way you choose. They can overlap. In fact, that creates part of the attractiveness of decoupage. Take only one side at a time and lay out the pictures on the table the way you would like them to look on the box.

  4. Step 4

Glue the pictures on by completely coating the back of the picture and applying the picture to the surface of the box. Push out extra glue and smooth out with the popsicle stick or brayer. Once one side is finished begin to lay out the work for the next, repeating the process for each side. Wait to decoupage the bottom of the box.

  5. Step 5

Allow the entire box to dry overnight once all sides are covered.

  6. Step 6

Add coats of thinned glue or decoupage medium over the entire box and allowing it to dry before applying the next. Build up the glue or medium until the surface is smooth and all edges of the pictures cannot be felt.

  7. Step 7

Decide what you want to do with the bottom of the box. If you choose to decoupage it also, do it now, after the rest is dried and you have a side to sit it on. You may also want to put felt on the bottom or leave it plain.
