When traveling in New York City, often the best way to travel is by subway. The New York City subway system has over 800 miles of track, making it one of the most extensive subways in the world. However, after following a few steps, it's rather easy to ride the subway in New York City. At first it may be complicated but if you do the necessary research, you can make it much easier.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Map
Step1
Figure out where you are coming from and where you want to go. The easiest way to do so is to view a map. At NYCSubway.org, you can find a route map, track map and historical maps. Simply go to the website and click on the map you want on the left side navigational panel.
Step2
Consider buying a Metrocard, which makes riding the subway much more convenient. You can buy a Metrocard you can re-charge as you need it or you can buy an unlimited-use Metrocard. You can purchase Metrocards in subway stations or in stores which display a Metrocard sticker on their window.
Step3
Utilize the HopStop website when planning your trip. On this website, you can find extensive maps and exact instructions on how to get from one place to the next. If you are planning a trip with multiple points of destination, HopStop is a great resource to help you plan out your trip. An example of how HopStop can help is by pointing out express subways which will get to you to your destination much faster. Additionally, you can use HopStop on mobile Internet devices to help you while on your journey.
Step4
Locate the closest subway station. If you have any questions, you can ask the clerks at the subway stations. Subway maps list the subway stations, so just pick the one closest to you. There are over 400 subway stations located in New York City.
Step5
Prepare to have your bags searched. In some subway stations in New York, you may have your bags checked. Also be aware of other rules. The rules are posted at each subway station.
Step6
Stay alert. Although the New York City subway system isn't overly dangerous, it can be confusing for those new to the experience. Keep your eyes and ears open. Keep all valuables close by your side. Avoid listening to music or anything else that may distract you until you become a more confident subway rider.
