Many people argue that Mac computers can't be customized to the same extent as PCs, but tech-savvy people should be able to work on their machines. You need to be sure that you order the right parts for a Mac if you want to work on it yourself.

Order Parts for a Mac

Step1
Look for an online Mac store that has a favorable return policy in case you accidentally order the wrong parts. At the very least, you should be able to return parts and only have to pay a restocking fee. Some Mac parts can be very expensive, so you want to be sure that you can get the right one.
Step2
Get the appropriate part number if you're ordering something like a laptop battery or power adapter. These items vary by computer make and the year they were manufactured, so try to look for your original computer paperwork for specifics.
Step3
Order parts directly from Apple if your computer is still under warranty. Some defective parts, such as power cords, can often be exchanged through the Applecare Repair Depot (see Resources below). You'll need to register with the Apple Store or .Mac in order to sign in and order your parts.
Step4
Ask about warranty options when you order expensive parts such as logic boards or monitor inverter cables. Some parts stores may require that they perform the installation in order for the part to receive a warranty.
Step5
Check at computer stores if you're buying Mac parts such as memory upgrades and external drives. These parts often don't need to be official Apple parts in order to work with your computer. Many monitors will also work with Mac laptops and desktops as long as they have a VGA or DVI port.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always insure your computer for full value if you have to ship it somewhere to have a part installed.
  • You can give your computer a small upgrade by purchasing a new logic board with a faster processor. These parts are expensive and should be used only for replacements, rather than for routine computer upgrades.
  • Don't have any Mac parts installed by people who are not Apple-certified technicians.
  • Computer parts can't be put in with your regular household or office trash. Contact a local Apple Store to learn about how to ship your old parts to a recycling center for free.
