Things You'll Need:
- Copy of your previous-year tax return
- TurboTax software
-
Step 1
Prepare to file your tax return(s) electronically by completing both federal and state returns and checking them for errors. Since one return may affect entries on the other, you will be less vulnerable to errors if you complete both returns before filing.
-
Step 2
Print a hard copy of all forms, schedules and worksheets associated with your tax return for your financial records, before or immediately after filing. This will protect you from having to depend on the life and health of your computer, hard drive and software, in the event that you need to access these important records in the future.
-
Step 3
Select the "Print and File" tab at the top of your TurboTax screen.
-
Step 4
Follow the prompts, and click "Continue" through the dialog boxes that explain the benefits of electronic filing. You may have to pay an electronic-filing fee via credit card if the TurboTax version you have purchased does not include free electronic filing.
-
Step 5
Download state software and use TurboTax to prepare your state return when prompted to do so, as many states require simultaneous filing of both returns if you file each electronically.
-
Step 6
Provide your name, credit-card information and email address to pay your electronic-filing fee and get your e-file confirmation.
-
Step 7
Confirm the tax return(s) you are filing, and follow on-screen instructions to confirm your identity with information from your previous tax return.
-
Step 8
"Sign" your returns electronically, and click "Transmit Returns Now" to file them.
