Train As a Software Consultant

Step1
Complete the education necessary to train as a software consultant. This may require a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration or Computer Science. Many companies will hire a software consultant that has at least five years experience with relevant software applications.
Step2
Have a working knowledge of most database operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows, Linux or Mac. Consider attending a networking course in each of these systems so that you can become certified in their use.
Step3
Choose an industry or field that interests you in terms of becoming a software consultant. Many industries use either proprietary database software to run their businesses or specific software applications. For instance, the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries use application software that is vastly different from the type of database software used by other companies in terms of labor distribution, inventory, accounting and cost control.
Step4
Train as a software consultant by attending a certification program tailored to the database software programs in which you want to specialize. Online training, from such websites as CustomGuide, is also available (see Resources below).
Step5
Determine whether you want to train for a permanent position with one company, or to market yourself as an independent software consultant who concentrates on specific software applications. This will help you focus on which types of software applications you want to master, and how you will market your talents when searching for employment.
Step6
Use an employment agency or recruitment process outsourcing (RPO) company that specializes in placing individuals in technical fields such as software consulting. RPO firms in particular can locate both contract work, where you consult for a company for a fixed amount of time, or permanent positions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many freelance software consultants feel that there is such a demand for this position that you should learn how to market yourself to increase employment opportunities.
