OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) software is software that is sold by technology manufacturers. The manufacturers often bundle this software with the hardware they produce to be sold at a considerable discount. You can also purchase stand-alone versions of the software.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Install Your OEM Software

Step1
Check the requirements of the software. Make sure that you have enough space on your computer hard drive to install the program, and be sure that you have the required amount of RAM. In addition, some programs need other programs in order to run properly. Be sure that you have the required programs, if applicable, and install them prior to installing your OEM software.
Step2
Close any other programs that you may have running. Programs running in the background will use up many of the resources that your computer needs to install your software. Fortunately, most programs will recognize that there are programs running in the background and will not continue with the installation until you close them.
Step3
Explore the OEM CD and look for the "readme" file or user manual. One of these will contain special instructions on how to install the software, if any. You can usually find them in the same folder containing the "executable" file.
Step4
Locate the key for your OEM software. You will need to enter this code at some point during installation in order for it to continue--this ensures that the program is legal. You can find the key within the software packaging.
Step5
Find the "executable" or "install" file on the OEM software's CD. When you double click this file, the install process will begin. Read and follow the instructions on each page carefully for the program to install properly.
Step6
Try using the autorun feature. Software CDs are usually programmed to begin installation once they are inserted into a computer's CD drive.
Step7
Contact the program developer or hardware manufacturer if you have problems installing your OEM software.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some programs have optional features that you can decide not to install. In order to save space on your hard drive, install only those features you know you will need
  • Be aware that it is not legal to copy OEM software for use on a different machine, nor is it legal to sell OEM software on its own without the machine for which it was meant. Furthermore, it is also illegal to install OEM software on a machine for which it was not intended.
  • Be aware that pirated software is often sold as OEM software.
