Software is a very important part of today's technology-driven life. The three types of software are system software, programming software and application software. System software is what the computer needs in order to operate, programming software helps the programmer create new software and application software is what end users need to complete tasks. There are several possible steps to take in order to replace lost software.

Replace Lost Software

Step1
Have your proof of purchase ready. You must be the owner of the software you want to replace. Look for your receipts, warranty, license and any other documentation that shows that you purchased the missing software. You may also need to have the software key.
Step2
Be aware that your warranty must be current in order to guarantee a replacement of your software. If your warranty has expired, the software manufacturer will be less likely to replace the product.
Step3
Contact the software manufacturer and find out how you can obtain a replacement. Be aware that you may be asked to pay a fee, especially if each software CD contains a special activation key. You may need to register the product before the company can help you. If the software is no longer current, the company may be unable to send you a replacement.
Step4
Contact the manufacturer of your hardware if your lost software was part of the package. The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) should be able to issue you replacement software. The name of the manufacturer and contact information may be listed on the Certificate of Authenticity. You may have to pay for the program.
Step5
Pay the shipping and handling fees. You will also be informed of any additional charges incurred from ordering the replacement software.

Tips & Warnings

  • Schedule regular backups of your system files and programs. Some operating systems are equipped to take snapshots of the computer's contents at regular intervals and save them. If a problem arises with the system, you can revert to the last known good state of your computer.
  • When you install new software on your computer, consider registering it with the manufacturer. If a problem arises, the company will know exactly which program you have and can help you faster.
  • Avoid installing software that is not licensed to you or meant for your operating system.
  • Avoid using pirated software. Such software is in violation of the law and you will not be able to obtain technical support if you have a problem with the program.
