How to Install Toon Boom for Windows

Toon Boom 3D animation software for Windows is available both via download and off-the-shelf purchase. It's designed both for the amateur user and pro animators. Toon Boom provides a few versions of the software to accommodate different skill levels. It's easy to install and comes with an extensive help library, both on and offline.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 32 MB of video RAM
  • Apple QuickTime
  • 256 MB of RAM
  • Graphics tablet (optional)
  • Windows 2000, XP or Vista
  • 100 MB of disk space
  • Toon Boon software

Install Toon Boom for Windows

Step1
Confirm you have the necessary 100 MB of disk space, 256 MB of RAM and 32 MB of video RAM on your Windows 2000, XP or Vista system
Step2
Install the current version of Apple QuickTime on your computer.
Step3
Make sure your monitor has at least 24-bit depth and supports a 1024 x 768 display resolution.
Step4
Decompress the Toon Boom file if you downloaded it and then double-click "setup.exe." Otherwise, insert the Toon Boom CD into your CD drive and wait for the installation program to display.
Step5
Follow the prompts of the on-screen installation guide to complete the install.
Step6
Restart your computer before using the program.

Launch Toon Boom

Step1
Launch Toon Boom by double-clicking the Toon Boom icon found on your desktop. You can also start the program by selecting "Start -> Programs -> Toon Boom Animation > Toon Boom Studio."
Step2
Disable the welcome screen if you don't want it to open every time the program starts up. This function can be disabled on the welcome screen by checking the box next to the message "Do Not Show This Window at Startup."

Display Toolbars

Step1
Choose the toolbars you want to display at the "View -> Toolbars" menu. You can choose to display any or all of the toolbars in a project window.
Step2
Decide from among the following toolbars: the "Main" toolbar, which allows you to open, save, cut, copy and paste content, the "Interactive Playback" toolbar, which allows control of scene playback, the Grid "Control" toolbar, which displays grids for drawing, the "Onion Skin" toolbar, which lets you see the next or prior drawings, the "Peg" toolbar, which details information about the peg path, and the "Scene View" toolbar, which lets you modify what is in the "View" window.

Create Keyboard Shortcuts

Step1
Select the "Preferences" option in Toon Boom to open a "Preferences" dialog box.
Step2
Choose the "Shortcuts" tab.
Step3
Pick a command type from "Category" drop-down menu, as well as a command from the "Commands" list.
Step4
Avoid commands that are already assigned a shortcut. They will display in the "Current Key" box.
Step5
Click on the "Click and Press New Key" button and hold down the keys you want to use as a shortcut. The keys will then appear in the "Current Key" box.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the AutoRun feature is not activated on your CD drive, you will need to click on the drive letter and locate the "setup.exe" file to begin installation.
  • It's recommended that you purchase a graphics tablet to connect to your computer for use with Toon Boom.
  • In order to fully access Toon Boom support tutorials and forums, as well as receive email updates and upload your work to the Toon Boom Showcase, you'll need to register your copy of Toon Boom.
