How to Update Quicken

It's possible to update Quicken to fix bugs from previous versions or to get software patches as they become available online. Updating Quicken is not the same thing as converting to a new version, however. As you update, you will gain a few more tools to make the version you have better, but you won't get the tools available to those who own newer versions of the software.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Update Quicken

Step1
Subscribe to the online version of Quicken. This is an option that comes with your software, allowing you to check for updates. Most versions of Quicken will do this automatically every time you go online. You can also do it manually when you log on to download bank statements or back up files.
Step2
Check for updates manually by going into the "Help" menu. If an update is available, the words "Update Now" will be highlighted, and you will be able to click on them.
Step3
Set up Quicken to update automatically by going into the "Update Now" section and checking the appropriate box. One of the disadvantages of this option is that updates will automatically start downloading as you open the program. If you are in a rush to enter information, it will simply interrupt your work.
Step4
Make sure you report any problems you have with Quicken. Most of the updates available are created to fix bugs reported by users, so it's important that you let the company know what problems you are experiencing. If enough people complain about the same issue, it's likely that updates will be made available.
Step5
Search for "Update Patches" manually. This is especially helpful if you want to know specific information about what the new updates will include and do before you download them. Not all updates are useful to all users, so it makes sense to check in advance.

Tips & Warnings

  • Updates are permanently saved with the program. If you move Quicken to a second computer, you won't have to update again.
  • If you are looking for updates manually, keep in mind which version of Quicken you have. Some updates only work with Quicken Premier while others are made specifically for Quicken Starter.
  • If you update manually, check for updates every time you go online, so that you won't lose any changes that come around.
