SourceForge.net is a popular open-source development site. It hosts open-source software projects, provides web space, hosts the projects' file downloads and provides developer services like CVS source code access and bug tracking. In the spirit of open source, SourceForge.net provides accounts for developers and users free of charge.

Things You'll Need:

  • Valid, non-disposable email address
  • Secure password
  • Internet connection

    Create a SourceForge.net Account

  1. Step 1

Ensure that you have a valid email address that you use on a regular basis. SourceForge will not allow registrations with disposable email addresses such as those from dodgeit or mailinator, but it's perfectly acceptable to have an email address from a webmail service like Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo!!

  2. Step 2

Create a secure password that is at least 6 characters long and contains uppercase letters, lowercase letters and numbers. Your password should be different from your email password and hard to guess. Since you're going to be distributing software, a strong password is a must, as someone guessing your password is not only a risk to you and your account, but to everyone who downloads your software.

  3. Step 3

Open your web browser and go to SourceForge.net (see Resources below). There's also the handy web address shortcut "http://sf.net/", which you can use if you visit the SourceForge website often.

  4. Step 4

Click on "Create Account" in the upper right-hand corner. This will take you to an account registration page.

  5. Step 5

Enter your password in the first box and confirm it by typing it again in the second password box.

  6. Step 6

Click on "I agree, create account," to verify that you are at least 18 years old or have parental consent to create an account. You will be taken to a confirmation page.

  7. Step 7

Confirm your email address is correct and click on "Send Verification Email."

  8. Step 8

Wait for the confirmation email. It should arrive almost instantaneously, but it may take a few minutes. Be sure to check your spam folder if you have one, since it's possible that a confirmation email was sent but your spam filter sent it to the spam folder.

  9. Step 9

Click on the confirmation link in the email.

  10. Step 10

Complete the email verification. Enter your email address and SourceForge password.

  11. Step 11

Click on "Complete Email Verification." This will send you to one final form.

  12. Step 12

Enter account details. Here is where you select a username, a publicly displayed name, language and time-zone information. Be sure to select a username that suits you, because you cannot change it.

  13. Step 13

    Click on "Verify Details."

  14. Step 14

Confirm and double-check the information you just entered and click "Complete Registration."

  15. Step 15

Click on "Log In" at the top of the page.

  16. Step 16

Enter your username and password and click "Log In" to access your new SourceForge.net account.

Tips & Warnings
