Educational software exists for all levels of schooling. You can use software to help prepare your young children for their first days of school or to get yourself ready to take college entrance exams. You might save some money if you keep a few general ideas in mind while you shop for educational software.

Shop for Educational Software

Step1
Write up a list of expectations for your ideal program. Some software is game oriented while others present information and then quiz you on it. If you're looking for educational software for your children, you should decide whether you want one program for each school year or some sort of package deal, like grades four through six in one program.
Step2
Make a list of your computer's hardware specifications. You should know your processor speed, memory, available hard disk space and operating system. Your graphics card might need to meet certain requirements for some software.
Step3
Visit a large software store or the electronics department of a retail store. Video game stores have some educational software, but they often don't have a large selection.
Step4
Shop online when you're looking to buy educational software. You'll have to pay shipping, but online stores often have the largest selection.
Step5
Look for software made by large educational companies. For example, companies that hold college-prep classes are generally well respected for their SAT prep software.
Step6
Read the store's return policy before you buy any educational software. You'll want to be sure that you can return an opened product if for some reason it does not work on your computer.
Step7
Look at several user reviews of the software before you buy it. Most of the largest online software stores have a spot for user reviews on each product page. Check the reviews at several sites to make sure they aren't biased or loaded for marketing.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can sometimes find excellent deals on educational software if you shop during the back-to-school period in late August and early September.
  • Check weekly store fliers for coupons and package deals on educational software.
  • Some software has endorsements from teachers and educational groups.
  • If you feel overwhelmed by the software choices, you may want to ask your child's school whether they recommend any specific programs.
  • Some children's software might be affiliated with a toy or television franchise but have very limited educational tools. Be sure to check several reviews before you buy any children's software.
