How to have a Man of Honor

Congratulations! You're engaged. Now everyone's after you to find out who your bridesmaids will be. If your best friend is of the male persuasion, you may want to consider having him as a Man of Honor.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Discuss it with your fiance.

Having a Man of Honor instead of a Maid of Honor is a little break from tradition. You may want to make sure that your future husband is alright with the modern approach. Furthermore, he may need some reassurance that your best buddy is just that... and not in competition for the groom's spot.
Step2
Ask him.

Tell him that you'd like to have him for your honor attendant, and explain how much it would mean for him to be by your side. There must be some reason you want him instead of a female friend, right? He may also need an explanation of his duties before he can commit.
Step3
Break the news.

Next time someone asks you who your Maid of Honor is going to be, you have an answer for them. They may be surprised that you chose a guy, but times are changing. You've chosen, and if they get huffy, you can always pull the "I'm the bride - it's my day" routine.
Step4
Dress him.

This part can be tricky. You want him to look masculine, but you also need to make it clear that he belongs on your side of the party. One suggestion is for him to wear a tux, but for his vest to be the same color as the bridesmaids' dresses. He may also want some flowers pinned on his jacket rather than having a bouquet to carry. This part is between you and him.
Step5
Have fun!

You have now succeeded in altering tradition and planning your wedding the way you want it. Don't forget to get gifts of appreciation for your attendants!

Tips & Warnings

  • If your Man of Honor is uncomfortable planning a bridal shower (as tradition calls for), you can either have a couples shower or let one of your other attendants plan it.
  • If your family (or his family) are ultra-traditional, you may want to get their opinions on having a Man of Honor before you decide. If it is a big deal to them, you may want to rethink whether it is a big deal to you, too.
