How to Remove the Windows XP Pro Greeting Window on Startup

With a few simple clicks of your mouse you can remove or change the startup greeting sound for Windows XP, and/or remove the Welcome Screen.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • PC Computer and Windows XP
  1. Step 1

    To remove the Welcome Screen that appears at startup, click the Start Button on your task bar, then click on Control Panel.

  2. Step 2

    Click on User Accounts. Under the heading of Pick a Task, click on Change the Way Users Log On or Off. Click Use the Welcome Screen to disable if checked. That's it! Please see Note below for qualifiers about turning off this feature.

  3. Step 3

    To change or silence the Startup greeting sound, go again to your Control Panel. Scroll through the list of icons till you find, SOUND AND AUDIO DEVICES. Click that icon.

  4. Step 4

    A tabbed window will open. Click on the Sounds tab.

  5. Step 5

    Scroll through the Program Events till you find Start Windows. From here you can either silence the default sound by clicking the drop down menu for Sound Scheme and selecting No Sounds, or you can change the sound by clicking the Browse button beneath the Sounds heading.

  6. Step 6

    After you've made your selection, whether it be No Sounds, or you've picked a new sound, click the OK button. You're finished!

Tips & Warnings
  • To turn on or off the Use Welcome Screen feature on your computer,you must have a either a stand alone computer, or if you are part of a work group, you must have a computer administrator account on your computer or on another in the group. If you are part of a network domain, then logging on at the Welcome screen is not available.
