Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Time
  • Pen and paper
  1. Step 1

    1. Magazine Photographs: You probably have some magazines sitting around. The photographs often suggest a story or can give you a story idea. You can work on this by yourself or with others.

  2. Step 2

    2. Freewrite: This technique will help you draw forth creative ideas trying to hide in your subconscious. Write for 10 minutes without stopping, without worrying about grammar, and without reading what you wrote. Once you're done, you can read it. Mine this document for ideas.

  3. Step 3

    3. Look at a Book: Take a book you have nearby and write down the first 10 words you see. Choose words that you don't normally use. Then, freewrite a paragraph or two using the 10 words. This exercise can lead you in a creative direction.

  4. Step 4

    4. Create a Swipe File: If you have time, compile a list of words, phrases and even newspaper article clippings that you can return to when you need ideas in the future.
