Don't over do it... just sprinkle!
Try cayenne pepper! Sprinkle it anywhere you want pesky animals to stay away. This is the cheapest, safest, and most humane way to keep dogs off of grass, out of flower beds, or anywhere you don't want them. It only takes a few sniffs and they will get the hint. Reapply weekly for about a month for your pets or regularly for strays!

Ask your pet store to recommend a product!
Try a chemical dog repellent! Your local pet store or garden supply store will have a chemical repellent to keep dogs and cats at bay. They come in a variety of powders or sprays and some are even all-natural (the safest of this type). Follow the manufacturer's directions for best results. A bit more costly that using cayenne pepper but may be the trick you need! Works for your pet or strays!

Bad Rover!
For your pet, you can try an electronic repellent. Some work on ultrasonic frequencies to send a deterring sound to Rover while others can deliver a mild shock if Rover gets to close to a planted "trigger". This type of system only works if you work with your dog and supply the proper rewards! Many pet lovers frown on the shock collar method and swear that the proper training along with any other deterrent will work!

Tips & Warnings
With any dog deterrent method, your results for your home pet will increase drastically if you spend time to reward your dog for proper behavior!
If strays are a problem and these deterrents don't seem to be the answer, your local animal control center may be able to help!
If your neighbor's dog seems to be the problem, most of the time some kind human interaction explaining the problem with your neighbor can save lots of problems down the line!
Follow manufacturer's instructions with any dog deterrent you choose.
Discuss the problem with your vet or sales clerk at a local pet store first. They may be able to save you time and heartache.
Steer clear of any other ideas you might have (i.e. anti-freeze, other chemicals, etc.). They can kill animals and possibly land you fines or prison time (usually both).
If you use the cayenne pepper method, let your kids know not to play in those areas.
Avoid using cayenne pepper method indoors.
