An All American Hamburger

Are you clinging to the last days of summer like a 5-year old girl that won't give up her blanky on wash day? Have you spent the last hour making sure the grill has the right temperature, perfect for burgers? Do you want to do justice to the last burger before autumn drops a ton of leaves on your patio? Here's how to make a the burger Coup De Gras...

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hamburger Patties
  • Butter
  • Hamburger buns
  • Tomato Slices
  • Onion Slice
  • Sliced Pickles
  • Sliced Cheese
  • Mayonaise
  1. Step 1

Just as the burgers are a few minutes from being done, butter both sides of you bun and place them on the grill, buttered side down. This will add a nice little toasting to the bread.

  2. Step 2

While the buns are toasting lay one slice of cheese on your patties. Over the next couple of minutes the cheese will melt and act as a glue-like foundation for the other fixings.

  3. Step 3

Remove the buns from the grill and put a medium coat of mayo on each side of the bun. This will also act as a glue like stabilizer for the other fixings. Place the burger with the melted cheese on the bottom, flat half of the bun, centered.

  4. Step 4
    Mmmmmm...tomatoes....
    Mmmmmm...tomatoes....

One slice of tomato should be placed directly on top of the patty. This will place the tomato flavor closer to the meat and eliminate the need for catsup. Since tomatoes are technically a fruit they make a great sweet compliment to the protein of the meat and cheese.

  5. Step 5

NOW add the lettuce. It may take a couple of pieces depending on how much you like lettuce. It is important however, to remove the white colored area from the lettuce leaf. This area retains more water while the plant is still in the ground and is less flavorful.

  6. Step 6

Place 3 to 4 pickle slices on top of the lettuce. Don't overlap them as this will cause the "Pyramid Affect" and tend to slip out of the burger. Their edges should just barely touch. If you are using "deli slices" like in the picture, only use 2 of them as you don't want to overpower the flavor of the meat and other fixings.

  7. Step 7
The type of onion you use is up to personal choice.

Finally, remove 2 or 3 rings from the outer edge of the onion slice. The bigger the diameter of the slice the less you will need. These you will overlap on top of the pickles to for a triangle pattern at the very top.

  8. Step 8
    Mmmm...Beer...
    Mmmm...Beer...

Add the top of the bun. Drop a handful of lightly salted fries on the plate. That's what catsup is for, not the burger. Grab a napkin, a beer, and the remote. Find your favorite football team on the tube and eat like a man.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be nice if the family comes around the grill. As men we have a tendency to growl when others come into our territory.
  • Napkins are a must, but shirt tails work.
  • Watch for kids and pets around hot grills
  • Check for food allergies before serving guests
  • Always drink responsibly

on 9/26/2007 I like the idea of adding butter to the buns and toasting them. I am surprised you don't like ketchup on the meat - but variation is the spice of life!
