For some, the word organization sends them into a fit of terror and, for others, it's as natural as blinking. Here, we're going to talk about organizing a writing schedule. Yes, writer's need to be on some sort of schedule. Why? As a writer, I know that I let other things get in the way for various reasons. However, when I have a schedule I respect that time and my peers follow along.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • daily planner
  • wall calendar
  • pens or pencils
  • spiral bound notebook
Step1
Place your daily planner and wall calendar in front of you and get ready to write. Your daily planner is for more detailed notes, while your wall calendar is for deadlines and appointments. Be sure to cross reference this information regularly.
Step2
In your daily planner, work on week at a time (a week ahead, if possible) blocking out time for searching for jobs, querying, following up with editors, writing and research. Give yourself a certain amount of time for each task (for example, 20 minutes to search and query) so you can move on from task to task successfully.
Step3
On your wall calendar, write out all the deadlines for the month and keep it updated as new deadlines come to you. Add all appointments, including personal matters, and special occasions. Note that it's a good idea to give yourself a self-imposed deadline for assignments a few days before the real assignment. That way, you're always on time.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may wish to use highlighters (pink for personal, yellow for work, etc.) to keep your action items better organized.
  • Some writers use a timer to keep themselves on task.
  • Don't forget to schedule in time to eat and other necessary breaks.
  • Work away from the television, if possible, to avoid distractions and keep yourself productive.
  • Talk with your family and your peers about your schedule so they'll respect the time you need to work.
