Things You'll Need:
- Old Sheets
- Scissors
- Markers
- String/Fishing Line
- Filler
- Safety Pins
-
Step 1
Find an old sheet from the linen closet, or go to the local fabric shop and purchase a couple yards of their cheapest white cloth. Fold the sheet into as close to equal parts as you can get, and then place your fist in the middle of the folds.
-
Step 2
The cloth hanging down from your fist will make the tail for the ghost. If it's too short, then unfold the cloth by one, and check it again. If it's too long, then fold it one more time. You might want to try a tri fold to maximize your cloth. Once you've estimated your ghost tail length, cut your cloth along the folds you've decided on. Set the cut squares to the side.
-
Step 3
You will need two pieces of fishing line or string for each ghost. One to tie the neck and one to tie the ghost to the tree. I recommend fishing line for two reasons: it's incredibly strong, and nearly invisible so your ghosts will really look like they're floating.
-
Step 4
Gather your filling. We normally use newspaper, and just ball it up into slightly larger than the size of an orange. This will make the head for your ghost, so make it as small or as large as you want. Just make sure that you're accomodating for the tail to be either shorter or longer based off the size of the head.
-
Step 5
Take a square of sheet, and place the balled up filler as close to the center as possible. Gather the cloth up around the filler, and tighten the cloth around the filler. With a tight hold around the base of the filler, take a piece of string and tie off the filler section. Now you have your head and body for the ghost.
-
Step 6
Using a permanent marker - you want permanent in case it rains while the ghosts are outside, so the color doesn't run - create a face for the ghost. If you've got kids, this is an excellent activity for the kids to do to help you. Draw different faces on the ghosts. Use your imagination. If you've got a particularly large ghost, try writing Happy Halloween on the face, or maybe on the body.
-
Step 7
Once you've finished the faces, pin a safety pin to the top of the ghost's head. Run a fishing line or string through the top of the safety pin and tie it off securely.
-
Step 8
Go outside and hang your ghosts on any available tree branch or nail. Alter the height of the ghosts to make a layered effect.
