How to Rotate Layers in Adobe Photoshop

If you create a layer in Adobe Photoshop and want to have it rotated, you can select a rotation tool from the Edit menu to do so. It's a simple process that will give a dramatic new look to your layer by rotating it 90 degrees or 180 degrees in either direction.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Start Adobe Photoshop and create a new Photoshop document.

  2. Step 2

    Create a new layer by going to the "Layer" menu, selecting "New" and then selecting "Layer…"

  3. Step 3

    Name the layer and set any preferences you would like to have in the "New Layer" dialog box.

  4. Step 4

    Use the Type tool from the Photoshop toolbox to type some text onto your workspace. The Type tool is the letter "T" in the toolbox.

  5. Step 5

    Click on the new layer you created in the Layers palette to select the layer. When selected, the layer will turn to a darker shade of gray in the Layers palette.

  6. Step 6

    Choose the "Edit" menu, the "Transform" submenu and then choose "Rotate 90° CW". You text layer will now be rotated 90 degrees clockwise.

  7. Step 7

    Select the other rotation options from the "Transform" submenu to see what type of rotation effect happens to your text.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don't see the Layers palette, select "Layers" from the "Window" menu or press the F7 key on your keyboard to bring it up.
  • Choose the "Rotate" option from the "Transform" submenu to bring up an outline that you can use to find a custom rotation to apply to your text. Simply click and drag the markers to get the rotation effect.
