Onions come in a wide range of flavors: sharp, sweet or hot. Because of this variety, there are many uses for onions. For example, a deep fried onion ring can garnish a steak or a salad; it can be a side dish with a hamburger, or it can be part of a deep fried sampler with other vegetables. To deep fry onion rings, use these steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Deep fryer
  • Cooking oil
  • Onions
  • Flour
  • Eggs
  • Water or soda water
  • Seasonings, such as salt and pepper
  • Paper plates for breading station
  • Several bowls
  • Tongs and spoons
  • Paper towels
  1. Step 1

Pre-heat the oil in the deep fryer. Use vegetable or peanut oil. Heat to approximately 360 to 375 degrees F. The temperature depends on the fryer and the number of onion ring slices.

  2. Step 2

Peel the onion. Use any type of onion; thickness is a matter of personal preference. Thicker rings take longer to cook.

  3. Step 3

Mix the tempura batter in a bowl. Combine approximately 1 cup of flour and mix in seasonings, such as salt and pepper. Add one beaten egg. Whisk the mixture together until it is firm; add about 1 cup of cold water or soda water to thin the batter. The batter will be thick. Substitute a pre-packaged tempura mix if desired; follow package directions to prepare the mix.

  4. Step 4

Put the onion rings into the tempura batter, one at a time. Coat thoroughly. Shake off any excess tempura batter. Continue to coat the rings until there are enough for a frying batch.

  5. Step 5

Place the onion rings into the deep fryer. Use caution. Stir to keep the slices from sticking together or to the bottom. Fry until golden brown, approximately 2 to 4 minutes. Remove from the deep fryer. Drain on paper towels. Allow to cool slightly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add the onion rings to the deep fryer basket after the basket has been lowered into the hot oil to prevent the onions from sticking to the basket.
  • Experiment with different types of onions; white, brown, red and purple. Also, pearl, or baby onions can be deep fried without slicing.
  • Always follow food and kitchen safety rules. Prevent cross-contamination of salmonella when working with raw eggs; wash hands and surfaces with soap and hot water and dry with paper towels.
  • Always follow the manufacturers operating instructions when using a deep fryer.
  • Always have a fire extinguisher available when working with hot oil. Never allow children near hot oil or a deep fryer while cooking.
