Whether as part of a seafood platter or as an appetizer with dipping sauces, fried breaded shrimp is a favorite of many. There are many variations of breaded shrimp; chefs and home cooks use a variety of seasonings and breading substances. The basic process, however, is the same.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shrimp
  • Flour
  • Beaten eggs
  • Breading material, either breadcrumbs or pre-packaged mix
  • Cooking oil
  • Deep fryer
  • Marinade, such as lime or lemon juice
  • Several bowls
  • Paper plates for breading station
  • Paper towels
  • Tongs and spoons
  • Sauce, such as tartar sauce or ketchup
  • Lemon slices for garnish
  1. Step 1

Gather the ingredients. The shrimp should be peeled and de-veined, but leave the tails attached. The breading station will include flour, beaten eggs and breading material. Use breadcrumbs, either seasoned or unseasoned, or pre-packaged breading mix.

  2. Step 2

Heat the oil in the deep fryer to 375 degrees F. While the oil is heating, consider marinating the shrimp in lemon juice, lime juice or hot sauce. This adds flavor to the shrimp.

  3. Step 3

Bread the shrimp. Dredge the shrimp first in flour; then dip into the beaten egg mixture. Shake the extra egg dip off the shrimp, and then coat the shrimp in the breading material. Bread several shrimp at once so they will cook together in the deep fryer.

  4. Step 4

Place the shrimp in the deep fryer carefully. Cook approximately 3 to 4 minutes until the shrimp are golden brown. Actual cooking time depends on the size and number of shrimp, the oil, the breading material and the deep fryer.

  5. Step 5

Remove the shrimp when they are golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Serve with ketchup, tartar sauce, hot sauce or other dipping sauce. Garnish with lemon slices.

Tips & Warnings
  • To prevent breaded shrimp from sticking to the basket, add the shrimp to the deep fryer basket after the basket has been lowered into the hot oil.
  • Experiment with different breaded shrimp dipping sauces. This adds a unique touch to the recipe.
  • Always follow the manufacturer's instructions when operating a deep fryer.
  • Always follow food and kitchen safety rules. When working with raw eggs, wash hands and surfaces with soap and hot water. When working with hot oil, always have a fire extinguisher available. Never allow children near a deep fryer while cooking.
  • Always unplug a deep fryer when not in use.
